I purchased this yesterday, and am returning it today. I didn't even try the lower resolutions. The scene was a very well lit 10'x5' billiard table, with a dark background. This was not going to be acceptable at all. Now I wasn't looking for HD for broadcast, but it would have been nice to actually have some decent picture. I have no idea how someone on these reviews actually said they couldn't tell the difference between this and HD.The features of the camera were very nice, including really cool touch "laser" navigation, and remote control, but the video quality was unacceptable. On the viewscreen, the picture was fine, but I was dismayed when I got it home with 4 hours of footage on Ultra Fine. I needed a camcorder to record billiard and pool matches for practice and archiving. The three balls had lots of artifacts as they moved around the table.
It uses MPEG2 in a.MOD format. Not very friendly to work with. This may work well for other uses, as having a backup camera for random things you may find, but be aware, the picture quality is HORRIBLE. Worse than even the old VHS camcorders of the 80's/90's.
30 GB is enough for more than 7 hours of ultra high quality recorded files.Cons:1. Pros:1. Doesn't have night recording2. Very excellent recorded files2. Compact good design.3. You can't capture good still images at all because it is VERY sensitive to hands vibrations.3. You may need to purchase an additional battery with extended power because it runs out of juice in no time (
Easy to use with good professional quality videos. Hard to keep stills in focus when lighting is not the greatest. The still shots are not as good as a digital camera designed solely for that use. It really is a video camera. Comes with a software program easy to use and well designed for handling creating with your videos and still shots. Liked it so much.I bought this one for my son-in law who loved using mine for videos.
Love the hard drive camera. I know there are "Workarounds" but I've tried a couple and they are either still a huge pain or they don't work at all. Both of them crash when trying to deal with these files, when clearly they shouldn't.
Quality is generally OK, the zoom is nice. If not for that this camera would be great and I'd give it 4-5 stars. Has a lot of good features.
JVC really bombed by using this format. However, it's all ruined by the fact that the camera saves the files in.MOD/.MOI format. This makes it a huge pain to try and put together a movie from all the clips using either Windows Movie Maker or, for example, Adobe Premiere Elements.
But this has been a HUGE headache for me.
I bought this camera to make home videos of my kids. You get what you pay for with this camera. I am not at all a professional videographer but the image quality of this camera leaves a lot to be desired, very grainy even in adequate lighting. The camera is very small and sleek, LCD screen very clear but the images on my computer were not, which is way more important. I returned it and bought a mini dv camcorder, much better quality. I think you would have to pay a lot more money for a hard drive camera that has good quality video.
